As If...

It's been nearly two weeks of sick kids and a sick husband.  Everyone is finally starting to feel better, but needless to say, Chris and I have had ZERO time to ourselves and with each other, but that would all change last night.  We finally had a "romantic" evening together.  Without kids.  In the ER.

Yep, you heard me.  As if the ER hadn't seen enough of the Morrows lately, THIS was our only escape in two weeks and in true Chris and Heather fashion we made the best of it.

Yesterday afternoon around 3:30 I started to feel a little "off".  My neck was hurting and my lips were feeling almost numb, but I didn't think much of it.  At 6:00 when Chris and Lucee woke from a nap my neck was worse and my lips were definitely numb.  When I told Chris about it he immediately went into paramedic mode, asking me questions and testing my physical abilities.  He asked me to smile and blink and raise my eyebrows, all of which I was only able to do on the left side of my face.  Being a paramedic, he sees a lot of serious stuff so my little complaints of pain here and pain there usually just get brushed off because he knows I'm not dying.  But this time he was alarmed, which had me worried.  He told me I needed to see a doctor right away.  So, for the second time in four days I called Ask-A-Nurse and they confirmed that I needed to be seen immediately.  I was told that while they can't diagnose a patient over the phone she felt confident it wasn't a stroke, but wanted to rule out a tumor and agreed with Chris that it was likely Bell's Palsy.

Chris' mom came to sit with the girls and I immediately used my cell to Google Bell's Palsy on the way to the ER.  While I'm not dismissing the seriousness of Bell's Palsy, I read something that brought tears to my eyes.  Tears brought on from laughing my ass off.  This is what I read.  "...to prevent corneal infections some patients with Bell's Palsy may be required to wear an eye patch...some patients develop a complication where the closing of the eye causes the corner of the mouth to lift involuntarily."  I said to Chris, "Arrrrggghh, matey!  Me looks like a pirate!"  And Chris laughed so hard he SNORTED.  TWICE.  And this was the beginning of our delightfully, romantic date in the ER.

Once we got checked in, my condition worsened, but our sense of humor improved.  We spent the evening cracking pirate jokes as we waited to find out about my condition.  At one point, Chris turned to me and said, "Baby, I love you.  I love you so much because you always let me make fun of you - whether it's something you say, something you do or just your facial paralysis."  Oh my God!  Now, THAT is love.  And a quote I'll never, ever forget.

After some more questions and physical examinations and a CT scan, I was diagnosed with Bell's Palsy.  And a seriously sick sense of humor.

Bell's Palsy is a type of paralysis (or weakness) of the muscles in the face, thought to be due to inflammation of the seventh cranial nerve, also known as the facial nerve. While it can strike anyone, it seems to occur more frequently in individuals recovering from viral infections and people with diabetes (neither of which I have). Bell's palsy affects only one side of the face at a time, and only rarely recurs in the same individual.

Bell's palsy tends to come on very suddenly. You may go to bed one night with no noticeable symptoms, only to peer in the mirror the next morning and notice that your face appears to be drooping. Mine came on within a matter of hours and I showed almost every symptom of the condition.

  • Sudden onset of paralysis or weakness on one side of your face
  • Inability to close the upper eye lid
  • Uneven mouth shape
  • Impaired Speech
  • Pain behind or in front of your ear on the affected side
  • Sounds that seem louder on the affected side
  • Headache
  • Changes in the amount of tears and saliva your body produces
  • Loss of taste on the front portion of your tongue (Tuesday night I complained to Chris that I might as well have been chewing on cardboard because the pizza we had didn't taste much better.  Not that I make a habit of chewing on cardboard.  Anymore.)

Within a day or two, the paralysis usually reaches its peak. Most people start to recover within a couple of weeks and are completely recovered within three months. Some people who develop Bell's palsy have a longer recovery period or have some permanent symptoms of the condition.

I've still got really bad pain in my ear and neck, but I've got good meds for that.  It's hard to eat and drink because I can only feel one side of my mouth and there's only a small spot in my mouth that has a sense of taste, but it's my eye that's really bothering me.  Because I can't close it all the way it's very dry and I'm having some difficulty seeing at times.  I'm using artificial tears to help with the dryness and I have to tape it shut at night.  While I don't have to wear a patch, Chris would soooooo get off on buying this for me.

This may seriously be the longest blog post ever, but I wanted to share with you what's going on with me.  If anyone else has ever had Bell's Palsy, please leave a comment here on the blog or drop me a line.  I'd love to hear from you.

In the meantime, I'll be on the couch, doped up, taped up, and listening to my husband crack pirate jokes.

Until next time,
H

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Misty!

She's inspiring.  She's genuine.  She's beautiful.  She's a mother.  She's a photographer.  And she's one of my very best friends.  (Even if she does have four kids and a flat stomach.)

She's Got My Back

After a rough couple of days, a seriously sleepless night and a super early morning I know I can count on The Lu to have my back.  She knows wassup.  Just listen.

Sicko

Grey Goose, take me away!  FAR.  FAR.  AWAY.

Just a quick post to let everyone know I will be out of the office for the next several days with limited access to voice mail and email.  (WARNING: Large amounts of whining ahead.  Thanks in advance for humoring me.)

After getting The Lu over a nasty, little - no make that big, no HUGE is actually better - five day bug that involved more trips to the restroom than I care to count and numerous changes of pants per day than I can even remember, all while the spousal unit worked four out of five of those days.

[Uh, Heather - a breath would be good now.  There you go, girl.  INHALE......EXHALE......AHHHHHHH!  Your lungs are thanking you, dear.]

Where was I?  Oh, yeah.  Now The Ruler has come down with the most rotten cold I've ever seen.  It started with a simple runny nose on Friday night and ended with a FIVE HOUR trip to Urgent Care last night.  The poor thing not only has a nasty, nasty cold, but a severe double ear infection AND an infection in her eye that all came on so quickly.  Poor kid looks like she's been run over by a Mac truck that backed up and ran over her again.  And again.  And again.  And the spousal unit is on duty again today so I've got one kid stuck to my lap (even as I type this) and another who is bored out of her mind.  Needless to say I'm barely finding time to shower, let alone answer the phone and reply to emails.

I'll be getting back to everyone as soon as she's feeling better.  Thanks for your patience (and for letting me whine about it all.)  And since she's sitting here asking to see pictures from our last trip to the fire station I'll share with you guys, too.  These were taken last week when some of our preschool friends joined us for lunch in Lawrence and a visit with Chris and his crew.  They had so much fun.  I can't wait to see her smiling like this again!

And guess who just called from work to say he's sick now, too?

Grey Goose, here I come!

Until next time, let's all pray I survive these next few days!

Trendsetter

trendsetter - noun - ˈtren(d)-ˌse-tər - a person or thing that establishes a new trend or fashion.  See also Molly Jayne's.

You've all heard me talk about Molly Jayne's before.  It's one of my favorite boutique's in Kansas City.  In fact, it's the ONLY place I can go and find a killer pair of jeans in less than 20 minutes...and if you've ever read this blog before I don't need to tell you how I feel about jeans.  Or Molly Jayne.  Miss Molly herself is one of my portrait clients and has become a great friend (not to mention a major fashion inspiration).

Her Life is featuring Molly's Jayne's in their Trendsetter section and I was lucky enough to do the shoot.  Let me just say this was a MAJOR change of pace for me, but one that I absolutely LOVED.

We shot on location at the amazing Freighthouse Flats.  Thank you to Korb Maxwell for opening up this incredible space for the day.  If my family could fit in a two bedroom, I WOULD SO LIVE THERE!

The gorgeous Miss Leslie of Exposure was our model.  She was beautiful, delightful and totally ROCKED IT OUT!   Thank you, Leslie, for all of your hard work.  It was such a pleasure to shoot together.  You made my job so easy.  So easy in fact, I can hardly call it work.

Check out the awesome stuff Molly has for spring!

If Leslie and I were the same size I would have just called Molly and said, "I'm keeping the stuff.  Charge my card, sister."  So, in case you're wondering what I'll be doing this week it's likely you'll find me raiding the racks at Molly Jayne's.

Molly doesn't have a website, but you'll find her at 6 SW 3rd Street in Lee's Summit and trust me, it's well worth the trip.  And who knows, maybe I'll see you there.

Until next time, happy shopping!

Curls, Curls, Curls

I was lucky enough to spend an afternoon with these adorable little ones.  It was a bit chilly, but we didn't let that stop us from having some serious fun.

Meet Emma, who totally ROCKED this adorable hat.  I want one for my girls!  Heck, I want one for ME!  And don't you just love her curls?

And her incredibly sweet baby brother, Calvin, who just stole my heart.  This little snuggle bug was also blessed with some amazing curls!  Look out ladies, I see a heartbreaker in the making!

Damn It Feels Good

Today could quite possibly be one of the most blooper filled days of our lives.  The day started with Chris having some car trouble so he comes in the bedroom to wake me up at 6:15 this morning.  Yes, I said IN THE MORNING, people!  And I don't have to tell you that this in and of itself is nothing short of RIDICULOUS BEHAVIOR on his part.  I won't bore you with the details, but I will tell you that I proceeded to lock myself out of the house today.

TWICE!

But I didn't let it get to me because I was wearing my brand new shirt and...well, I'll just let the shirt speak for itself.

Gangster_shirt

Yes, I recently ordered this shirt for myself and I even got one for Chris, too.  (We will NOT be wearing them at the same time, though.  That is SO NOT gangster.)

Check out the insane tees from SMASH.  My other favorite - Don't Meth With Iowa.  How funny is that???

Oh!  I forgot to post the other day, but I'm so excited to tell you that we recently passed 20,000 hits on the blog.  WOO!  HOO!  Compared to some blogs, that's a drop in the bucket, but I am truly humbled by the amount of people who take the time to stop by and see what's going on here.  I can't thank you enough for sharing with me the joy I find in my work.  And an extra big thank you to those who leave their comments as well.  It just makes my day!

Until next time, have a great Saturday!

UPDATE: 1/14/08 11:15am - We're back up and running.  Thank goodness!  Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for your understanding!
________________________________________________________________________________________

We're having phone issues...AGAIN!  They've had to completely shut down our line and they're rebuilding part of it.  In the mean time, if you need to reach me, please email me.

I'm so sorry for the inconvenience!  Sometimes living in an old neighborhood really sucks, but hopefully this is the last time we'll have to deal with this problem.

Have a great Sunday,
H

S P A C E S

Remember the shoot I did with Kelly Littmann of Farmstead?  The shoot was for the cover of Her Life Magazine, but Kelly loved the images so much she started using them in her ads, including this one in Spaces Magazine.  I finally got my hands on this issue and was so excited to share with everyone.

Spaces is an amazing magazine published by the Kansas City Star.  It's filled with fashion, interiors, travel, dining, decorating, entertaining and more.  Always a great read!

I've really enjoyed the commercial and editorial work I've been doing lately.  In fact, Kelly and I will be working together again in the near future so stay tuned for more!

Have a terrific weekend!
